Hades had originally intended to go to the Fairylands, but it became clear that his travels that day would only take him to the dead places of the Many Kingdoms, and he had had enough of dead places for the time being. Instead, he traveled back through the catacombs that seemed to connect the Dead Woods and the lower dungeons to his own fortress, and he contemplated what to do next. He made himself comfortable in what would become his favorite room in the Forbidden Mountain, laughing at himself because even though he had made a point of trying to make it different from his palace in the Underworld, he now realized there were similarities.

He sat there, taking in the room, loving the way he felt there. Rather than skulls, the dominating features of his new fortress were ravens and crows. He adorned it with numerous statues of his favorite avian creatures, and their eyes blazed with green fire to match the green moss and vines that permeated the stone fortress. In his new dining hall, he had a large, round, black marble table, and at its center was a sculpture of a dead tree where the spirits of crows rested and cawed to one another. Occasionally they fluttered down to visit with the other wraith crows, which resided on the chairs that he now realized looked just like the ones in his dining hall in the Underworld. Throughout the fortress, green flames hung in the air like fireflies, dancing to the crow songs, which captivated Hades, giving him tiny moments of peace. He contemplated his life so far, realizing it hadn’t been a good one, but he was always thankful for the glimmering instances that brought him peace and even happiness, even if just for a moment. This was one of those moments.

Hades sat at his dining table, petting one of the crow spirits, deciding how he was going to set his plans into motion. He would send a message to the Odd Sisters, inviting them to his new castle after the fairy exams were over. He conjured a roll of parchment, a quill, a pot of ink, a length of sealing wax, and his official seal, and quickly scribbled a note to the Odd Sisters letting them know he was there and would like them to attend upon him at their earliest convenience. And by earliest convenience, he meant now. He folded the note, melted a blob of wax onto the folded parchment, and placed his seal, which of course showed a dignified image of his profile. Then he handed it to one of the wraith ravens. “Take this to the Odd Sisters. You will find them in the Fairylands,” he said, and he watched the ghostly raven fly out of the window. He envied the raven’s ability to travel so freely. Even in his bird form, Hades wasn’t truly free. Perhaps once the Odd Sisters split his fate string and the other Hades had taken up residence
